Did you know the world’s tallest indoor waterfall is located in Jewel Changi Airport?
At 40 metres high with water flowing through the oculus down seven floors, the HSBC Rain Vortex is now one of the most Instagrammable places in Singapore for sure.
The Jewel is located in the public area of Changi Airport and connected to Terminal 1 Arrival Hall. You can get to Jewel from Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 via the link bridges (with travelators) and it only takes around 5-10 mins walk.
Things to See and Do in Jewel Changi Airport
World’s tallest indoor waterfall
Designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who also worked on Marina Bay Sands, Jewel took about five years to build and cost S$1.7 billion.
The Rain Vortex is surrounded by Shiseido Forest Valley that houses hundreds of trees and palms. It’s all indoor and air-conditioned under the glass and steel dome that allows natural light to stream in.
If you are lucky, you can even see a rainbow at the waterfall.
The Shiseido Forest Valley in Jewel
With a little imagination, the Forest Valley looks like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, don’t you think so? Or perhaps, a smaller version of Gardens by the Bay.
Some even think it feels like Jurassic Park. And pictures of the Rain Vortex have the uncanny resemblance of the Viserion ice dragon breathing blue fire in the Game of Thrones …
There’s something in the air that uplifts the mood. Waterfall creates negative ions and soothing sound. Climb the steps along the cascading falls and enjoy the floral displays at the Forest Valley and soak in the surrounding views at different levels.
A cheery place filled with friends and families, and plenty of photo opportunities.
Retail and Food
Opened on 17 April 2019, Jewel Changi Airport not only serves as a retail and leisure hub, it doubles up as an indoor park (air-conditioned!).
Spanning 10 storeys (5 above ground, 5 below ground), Basement 2 is the Food Hall featuring popular food chains and local eats at Five Spice food court.
You can even find whole durian fruits ready to be ripped and eaten fresh from shell! And don’t be surprised to see the snaking queues at A&W, which makes a come back in 16 years.
The Basement 1 to Level 5 comprise of leisure facilities including Shaw Theatres with IMAX, gardens, hotel accommodation (YotelAir) and a huge array of shops with some taking up duplex spaces in Jewel Changi Airport.
The centrepiece of the Food Hall is the acrylic column of the Rain Vortex, so you won’t get water splashes.
From luxury brands to casual cafes, the list goes on… By the way, have you tried Shake Shack? Rich and Good Cake Shop? These are some of the popular ones with long queues! Another famous chain is London’s Burger and Lobster which is located on level 5.
Pokemon Center in Jewel Changi Airport
Pokemon fans rejoice! Jewel Changi Airport is home to the first Pokemon Center in Asia, outside Japan. There are so many cute Pokemon plush toys of all shapes and sizes neatly display on rows and rows of shelves, waiting for their owners.
Best time to visit Jewel Changi Airport
Been to Jewel on both weekdays and weekends, the best time to visit the Jewel is before noon when the crowd starts coming in. Weekends (though Saturday seems better) and public holidays are so crowded that it seems half of Singapore population is there. Don’t be surprised if Jewel carpark is full on a public holiday.
Rain Vortex Light & Sound Show
Personally, I prefer to see the Forest Valley and Rain Vortex in the day for the greenery, though in the evening, the waterfall is illuminated with colours. Evenings are more crowded, especially when people are waiting to see the Rain Vortex Light & Sound Show and diners queuing up for dinner outside restaurants in Jewel Changi Airport.
From 7:30pm to 12:30am daily, catch the choreographed show that makes the waterfall glow. The hourly show lasts for 5 mins and is FREE.

Hi Team Traveler Folio,
Jewel Changi Airport, one of the best Airports in the world, must place to visit and the best authentic place in Singapore to be visited once in lifetime. The best part about the article is the picture shown of Games of Thrones with the Indoor Waterfall image, it’s brilliant idea for comparison.
