Night scenes around Singapore

Happy 2010! Long waited for this post my friends! I just came back from Penang, yes… spent my New Year in Penang. These shots were taken with Pentax K-X on Christmas and before New Year in Singapore. We had a fun time hopping around the city with our Penang relatives.

Somehow, I still prefer the Christmas lights along Orchard in 2008. There were bigger and brighter decorations about the “Sweets Family” back then.

I was also pretty lucky to win 3 tickets for the Singapore Flyer from a Christmas party! Or perhaps, Melissa was lucky. Who would expect to win 3 tickets instead of just a pair? A ticket costs S$29.50 for a 30 mins flight on the world’s largest observation wheel.

Up, up and away! Quite an awesome skyline view of the city area and the waterfront architecture. The blue illuminating dots are just floating balls on the water surface that reflected the blue light shine on them.

It’s light doodling time! We were once Angels by the sea …

I blogged about this attraction before in Aug 2008 – Merlion Park. Not much difference except you see the tall buildings of the Integrated Casino Resorts that are still under construction. The project is slated to complete in April this year, maybe?

The Fountain of Wealth at Suntec City, designed according to Feng Shui. At certain periods, when the giant fountain is turned off, visitors can walk towards the centre and around the smaller fountain for good luck. You would be surprised for the long queue at times! There is laser show at night and everyone can dedicate laser messages via the computer screen at the entrance of the fountain. I wanted to key in “Travelerfolio” in the message but we all wasted too much time giggling away while inputing the message and the connection timed out.

Marina Barrage

Officially opened in 1 Nov 2008, Marina Barrage is a dam built across the Marina Channel to create Singapore’s first freshwater urban reservoir. It’ll help Singapore to become self-sufficient in water by 2061 when its water agreement with Malaysia ends.

The Marina Bridge (dam) holds the nine crest gates that control water flow at the mouth of the Marina Channel. It also serves as a flood-control gate.

Er? The Singapore Flyer again? Yes! You can have a very nice view of the city from Marina Barrage.

The $226 million Marina Barrage is also a major lifestyle and tourist attraction! Many families visit this newly opened recreation centre over the weekends. The Colourful water jets add elegance to this amazing new architecture.

Merlion = Fish + Lion (Sentosa Part 2/4)

When you visit Sentosa, you will see this gigantic fierce-looking creature with a lion head and a fish body. You need not run, ‘cos it’s just a 12-storey high statue but is the tallest in Singapore. This imaginary creature is famously known as the Merlion, the emblem of Singapore Tourism Board. Visitors can take the lift up to the 12th floor of the Merlion statue to view the city.

The Merlion statue at the Merlion Park in Singapore mainland has a “softer” look than the fierce-looking one in Sentosa. =P Many do hope that what comes out of the Merlion’s mouth is free flow of beer. You know, when the locals say, someone “merlion”, it could mean someone vomits or his saliva got onto your face. XD

The lion head of this creature represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, which means “lion city” in Malay. The fish body recalls the ancient name of Temasek, which means “sea town” in Javanese. Back to Sentosa…. At the Merlion souvenir shop, these cute little Merlion plush toys have at least made an effort to soften the image of the fierce-looking Merlion statue. This is the first time I see Merlion has tongue! LOL!! One for S$16.90. (US$1 = S$1.51)

Cute toys. I don’t recall seeing this kind of plush toys selling in the mainland. Hmm, now their face look like a bear and their body resembles that of a sea lion to me. LOL!!!
